Jonny (FKA Jenn) Cameron has been a tireless cheerleader and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community since the mid-90s. This human has devoted their entire queer life to helping folks find community and safety. They spearheaded the opening of the LGBT resource center at Northwestern University back in 2004, and found great joy connecting young people to resources and being a friendly mentor.
Jonny (Jenn) is a founding member of Up North Pride, an organization that has built one of the largest Pride events in Michigan in just 6 years. Their love, patience, and warmth is felt by everyone around them. Our community is a stronger, brighter place with them in it.
We are all deserving of care. We live in a world that often falls short from meeting our basic needs. Gender confirmation is necessary medical care. For many, it is life and death.
This Friday, (3/8/19) Jonny will undergo a bilateral mastectomy aka chest reconstruction aka gender confirmation surgery in Ann Arbor. They are grateful to find the care they need, but it requires travel downstate, and a week-long stay at the hospital-hotel. The recovery time is up to 6 weeks, during which Jonny will be unable to lift more than a few pounds, drive or work. Elon will be out of work and with Jonny as primary caretaker during this time. After that, we will rely on friends/family to make sure that Jonny is fed, watered and looked after.
Back in 2017, Jonny and Elon started paying ungodly monthly premiums for a health insurance policy that was more likely than most to cover the procedure. Twenty months later, they will finally have this transformative procedure. Insurance will partially cover the cost of surgery, but the out of pocket costs including travel, hotel, and Jonny out of work will be upwards of $8500.
Until healthcare is accessible to all, let us join together to stand by our values, and to show our love and support to Jonny. Donated funds will go directly to paying the out of pocket/out of work costs for Jonny to heal and recover.
