If you take a country walk down Newgate in Wilmslow, you’re likely to pass a lovely community of rescue animals tucked away in the back lanes. Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary- also known as the Humane Education Society- has been a valued part of the local scene for many years now.
This is their story.
“We rescue and care for a number of animals, some of whom are looking for their new forever homes, and some who reside with us permanently. Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, horses, ponies, donkeys ducks, chickens - and of course Gilbert the pig- enjoy the safety and security of our care. As an independent charity we receive no funding other than kind legacies, donations and monies raised by our fundraising teams. We do what we can within our means to help as many animals as possible and we typically rehome about 200 per year to safe homes checked by our rehoming team.
Whilst all our energies are devoted to raising funds and providing the day to day care of our animals, this year we are escalating our fundraising efforts to support a big project which we must undertake this summer.
Our compound is the area of the Sanctuary which houses our rabbits, ferrets, hens, ducks and our Isolation unit. It has historically been a mish-mash of wooden buildings and ad – hoc extensions. It has been repaired numerous times. Having served us well for years, it now needs more than basic repairs and is currently not what we consider to be suitable or acceptable accommodation our animals. In our Isolation Unit, where our newest intakes (and the most vulnerable) spend their first few weeks, the roof leaks, we have pens out of action and we have no running water, which really is essential for all the cleaning we need to do. Hygiene is vital. The other half of this building currently has a hole in its wooden floor and its roof has had countless repairs.
So we have taken the decision to rebuild this essential accommodation, to save on constant repair bills and to secure its long-term future for our rescue animals. For this we need the ongoing support of kind donors”
