Virginia Cantrell's Cancer treatment

Dear Family and Friends,

Our mother,  Virginia Cantrell, was diagnosed with Stage 2, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer last month after undergoing a biopsy on one of three nodules that were found in her lungs.

Prior to the biopsy, Mom had been sick for many months with recurring flu symptoms, a chronic sinus infection and excruciating headaches that could only be relieved by taking ibuprofen. By the end of October, she had developed pneumonia. Weakened and struggling to breathe, she was taken to the clinic on November 4. She found out the next day that her x-ray results showed that there were collapsed air spaces in her lungs, indicating possible pneumonia.  On November 6, she was taken to the hospital, where it was discovered through a CT scan that she had three nodules in her left lung.

On November 26,  she had a biopsy done on one of the nodules, and on December 4, we received the devastating news that the nodule was cancerous. She was immediately put on a strict diet and regimen in order to boost her immune system and help her body prepare for the battle ahead. Unfortunately, cancer wasn't the only health issue she had to fight.

Although she had recovered from the pneumonia, she continued to experience daily debilitating sinus pain as well as severe headaches on the left side of her head. At this point, we didn't know what stage her cancer was and wouldn't be able see an oncologist until the 12th, so her doctors referred her to have another CT scan done on her head and sinuses.

By God's grace, the results came back negative. However, we still needed to find out what was causing the sinus pain and headaches, as it could negatively affect her cancer treatment. She eventually went back to the specialist who discovered, after ordering more tests, that she has a severe sinus infection caused by two types of bacteria. Mom is currently taking antibiotics for this bacterial infection, but she doesn't seem to be improving.

On December 12, Mom was seen by a medical oncologist who referred her to a radiation oncologist. It wasn't until the December 17th appointment with the radiation oncologist that we found out Mom's lung cancer was Stage 2 . The cancer had already spread into her lymph nodes when she had that CT scan done on November 6.  The doctor gave Mom two options for her cancer treatment: have surgery to remove her left lung or undergo a combination of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  The costs of either option is more than she can handle, given she is unable to work and has no health insurance. (Mom is a self-employed life insurance agent and has not not been able to obtain health insurance because none of the providers here on Guam offer individual plans.)

We have researched and found promising cancer treatments for Mom off-island. We are hoping to be able to take her for treatment as soon as possible.

We humbly ask for your prayers and help to raise funds for Mom's treatment, her growing medical bills, and all the additional expenses that come with this illness. We are grateful for any amount you are able to donate. No gift is too small!

We thank you so much for your love, prayers, and support! Praying for God's blessings upon you!

With appreciation,

Sonya and Nate
