My name is Lisa, and I work for a non-profit mental health care organization. I am writing today to ask for your support for my co-worker, 1st Sgt. Eduardo Calzada (Retired).
1st Sgt. Calzada retired from the US Army after 21 1/2 years of service as an Airborne Ranger. He's served in the Persian Gulf, Bosnia, S. Korea, and Iraq, and now serves his fellow veterans as a Veterans Service Navigator. He helps homeless veterans access medical and behavioral health care, and links them to programs that help them find jobs and housing.
Eduardo's parents and brother live in Puerto Rico, in a small town on the north side of the island called Carolina. He has not been in direct contact with his family since Hurrican Maria ravaged the island, but he has had third party information that they lost everything in the flooding following the storm surge.
He is really worried aboutr his family. Conditions in Puerto Rico are dire, and many are calling the aftermath of Hurricane Maria a massive public health crisis. 75% of the island is without electricity, in stifling heat. There is no access to clean water, food, or gasoline, let alone other supplies to repair the damage and begin rebuilding. Disaster relief is trickling in, but many are worried that it will be too late for some. Experts estimate it will take years to recover from the devastation.
1st Sgt. Calzada has a new baby at home and his finances are tight. Please help ease his mind by giving him something to send to his parents to help them in their time of need. I cannot imagine being so far from my family when their whole lives have been turned upside down. He was there for us, with his military service, when we needed him, and continues to be there for his fellow veterans. Please help us be there for him now. Thank you.
