Hi!
My name is Veronikka Gittens and I'm currently a junior at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. I'm a multipassionate dancer-scholar-activist who is constantly looking for ways to combine my loves for creating art, producing meaningful scholarship and engaging the community for social change through new experiences. As a Comparative Women's Studies major and an African Diaspora & the World minor, I'm interested in the experiences of women and people of color.
I was recently accepted into a competitive study abroad program that would allow me the opportunity to travel to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil for 5 weeks this summer. (June 3 - July 10, 2015). In Salvador, I will be taking Portuguese language courses and Brazilian culture courses as well as living in the community with a homestay family. The 8 credits I will receive for the classes I take will allow me to graduate in May 2016 with the rest of my class. (I took a leave of absence in Fall 2013 due to financial hardship.)
Going to Brazil will introduce me to a new culture and new language that will undoubtedly challenge me to use a more global lens in my academic and creative work. I hope to use my experiences abroad to inform future creative and academic work. I want to share what I learn with my local community, so I plan on encouraging other young people to pursue their travel dreams by sharing my story with them in my church's youth group.
The total projected cost of the trip is $6,360.00. All donations received will help cover tuition, room and board, roundtrip airfare and a Brazilian Student Visa.
Presently, I am applying for two student travel scholarships that will partially fund my study abroad trip. The first tuition payment of $1500.00 is due March 16 and the remaining balance of $3200.00 is due April 6. Airfare will be purchased between the two payment dates and a visa will be applied for after the last payment is made.
I have never been outside of the United States before and would love to make Brazil my first stop! I am asking for your financial support in taking advantage of this amazing opportunity and I am positive that with your contributions I can fulfill my dream.
