My name is Victoria. I'm raising money for my friend Chris who I've known since junior high.
Chris has Cerebral Palsy which has limited his mobility his entire life, but hasn't limited his personality or drive. Chris has always been the joke teller and the social butterfly, he always has a story to tell or a joke to make to get people laughing. He has always been a supportive and loyal person to his friends, and has maintained his independence even with CP. Chris loves Lego and currently has two full Lego cities built in his suite.
In December 2019, Chris broke his femur while helping his dad, who was living with brain cancer at the time, take the garbage out. His treatment at the hospital and subsequent rehabilitation facility leaves a lot to be desired, and his leg has never fully healed. His father passed away from brain cancer in 2021.
Over the last 4 years, Chris' health has declined rapidly. His father was his only support in the area and now that he has passed away, Chris is left with no one to help him advocate or even physically get to where he needs to be. He seldom leaves his home now and has no regular companionship as I live over 5 hours drive away.
Chris used to be able to hop in his truck and get to anywhere he needed to go. He used to be able to take walks, go out to events, and even work. Due to his unhealed leg, he is now in too much pain to do any of those things on a regular basis. He struggles to get up the stairs to the door of his basement apartment now. His health is rapidly declining, both mentally and physically, and his health care team appear to not be motivated to find the actual cause. He has talked of ending his life numerous times and has even looked into MAiD because he can't see a way out of this. He dies have a surgery scheduled for July 3 that should help with the pain & his mobility, but he will need extra support during recovery.
Chris does get government assistance, but the support he is getting is inadequate and leaves Chris with little sense of autonomy or independence. He struggles to keep up with his basic bills.
Long term plan is to help Chris move to another city/area where he will not only be closer to more health care options, specialist, etc, but also closer to myself, my partner, and another friend who will be able to directly help him advocate for his health, and offer him the friendship and companionship he currently does not have.
Short term goal is to get him caught up on his essential bills he is behind on, a total of about 600$, and give him a bit of a cushion going forward. I have set the amount at 2000$ to start as this would get him caught up, a bit of a cushion, and allow him to start looking to secure a new place for himself by providing him some money for a damage deposit if he find a place. Goal will be increased if it is met to help cover costs of the move itself, and any other costs that may be needed to get him fully set up in a new place.
Thank you so much for your support in this. Chris is a very dear, long time friend of mine, and he deserves a chance to live with dignity.
