NJ Family With Newborn Lost Everything In Fire

New Jersey Family Displaced by Fire – The Thompson Family (Tyler, Gina & Baby Amelia) $25,000 goal

On the evening of 9/13, my cousin and her brand new family lost their apartment to a devastating multi-unit fire on Cherry Street in Hammonton, NJ. Neighbors from across the street alerted them and called 9-1-1. Her husband grabbed their 4 month old baby, she grabbed a bottle and they ran out with nothing else but the clothes on their back. Tyler didn’t even have shoes on. They had just moved into their new apartment and hadn’t even finished unpacking when the fire struck. This young family, just starting out, now has to start from scratch. They are grateful to be alive and requested a special recognition to local First Responders!

The Thompson’s would like to thank their quick thinking neighbors as well as The Hammonton Fire Department  (1st on scene), Collings Lake and Winslow Twp. Fire Departments for responding within minutes and battling this fire for 3 hours. Our first responders are true heroes. The other heroes of the night include a stranger who handed my cousin $100 dollars and a neighbor who brought out her son’s clothes for baby Amelia. The Red Cross was on site to offer counseling, make sure they didn’t need a hotel room, and also gave a donation. Oh, and Gina went to the house the next day and someone, she doesn’t know who, had left a highchair on the lawn. It has been quite some time since I have witnessed so much grace in humanity. This South Jersey community is a class act!

Both locals to the area, Tyler and Gina are a young couple who met at their first jobs at Nelson’s Convenience Store in Atco. It was love at first sight and they have been together ever since. They were just starting out at their new apartment together and just gave birth to the cutest, happiest little baby named Amelia a few short months ago. Check out the last picture of my cousin’s family on the night of the fire, beaming with gratefulness to be alive and have such support. As crews worked to demolish flames, they sat on the grass with their backs towards the fire and played with Amelia to ensure their new baby girl would feel no stress or anxiety from the situation. I went today to drop off some diapers, and both Tyler and Gina are grateful that their family is still alive. Despite loosing everything, they've managed to use their gratitude to brighten the situation. I am stunned to see such optimism in such a tragic situation. They are currently staying with family members.

They were able to salvage just a few items, one of them being the baby’s stroller. Gina is such an amazing person, she always puts a smile on the face of the people around her.  Please consider making a donation to The Thompson Family to help ease their burden of starting completely over. If you are unable to donate, please share this fundraiser. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
