Salire in macchina.
Accendere il motore.
Scegliere dove andare.

I used to drive, but then paraosteoarthropathy further turned an already complicated situation upside down. Now I want to get back behind the wheel and reclaim some of that freedom.

My name is Enrico. Back in 1995, following a simple dive into the sea, I fractured my fifth cervical vertebra and was left almost completely paralyzed.
The quadriplegia that resulted has one particularly difficult consequence: it makes a person permanently dependent on the help of others. This is something that is very difficult to fully understand unless you experience it yourself, every day and in every aspect of your life.
Despite this, the determination and effort I have invested over the years to regain even a small degree of independence allowed me to obtain a special B driving licence and become able to get around without having to ask anyone for help.
For most people, getting around by car is simply part of everyday life. But for someone who is already severely limited in almost everything, it can be a true turning point.
Getting into the car.
Starting the engine.
Choosing where to go.
Leaving home without having to ask someone to take you somewhere…
I used to drive a properly adapted car, and I didn't need particularly sophisticated systems—until life decided to put me to the test once again.
A deterioration in my physical condition made it impossible for me to transfer from my wheelchair to the driver's seat, making it absolutely and permanently impossible for me to continue doing what I had always done.
When you lose the ability to drive, you don't just lose the ability to get from one place to another.
You lose the spontaneity of going out whenever you want.
The ability to organise your day without depending on someone else.
The freedom to go to work.
The possibility of maintaining that small piece of independent life you fought so hard to achieve.
But giving up has never been an option for me. Freedom is simply too precious to surrender.

Getting Back Behind the Wheel

In order to drive again, besides replacing my manual wheelchair with a powered one, I had to purchase a van that allows me to enter while remaining seated in my wheelchair, and have it fitted with a joystick-based driving system adapted to my current physical abilities.
Unfortunately, these systems are far more sophisticated and, consequently, much more expensive than the adaptations I used in the past.
But this isn't simply about modifying a vehicle.
It's about trying to reclaim a piece of my life.
And that is precisely what makes this expense so important to me.

The Car Is Also My Way Back to Work

There is an even more important reason.
Without the ability to drive, I have had to give up my job.

❤️ Why I Decided to Share My Story

Asking for help isn't easy.
Even less so when what you are asking for isn't something extraordinary, but simply the chance to do again something that once seemed completely normal.
For me, however, driving is no longer something ordinary.
It has become freedom.
It is that small measure of independence which, from the outside, may seem like very little, but to me means so much.
That is why I decided to tell my story and ask those who wish to do so to accompany me on this journey.

The Goal

The funds raised will help cover the costs required to adapt my vehicle, including the driving system, installation, and the necessary technical and administrative procedures.
I will be as transparent as possible about the costs and, once the work is completed, I would like to share the result with everyone who has chosen to support me.
Every contribution, large or small, will bring me a little closer to the moment when I can once again sit behind the wheel, start the engine, and drive away.
If you are unable to contribute financially, sharing this campaign can also make an enormous difference. A simple share might allow this story to reach someone who can help make it possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

And thank you to everyone who chooses to help me find my way back to the road.
