My heart is shattered writing this.
My son Nathan was struck by a car going 40–45 mph while he was a pedestrian. He died at the scene. First responders were able to revive him, and by the grace of God, he is still here with us. We are living in the middle of a miracle.
But that miracle came with devastating injuries.
Nathan suffered a traumatic brain injury, which is the most concerning and unpredictable part of his recovery right now. He is homebound and requires constant care and supervision. We are doing everything we can to keep him comfortable, stable, and from going stir crazy while his brain heals.
He attends physical therapy three times a week. He is being seen regularly by a neurologist and a concussion clinic. He also has to see a cardiologist because of the potential damage to his heart from the high-impact collision. His lungs are still healing from severe bruising, and he has multiple fractures throughout his body that are still in the healing process.
Our lives changed in an instant.
I have had to leave work so I can care for him full-time. There was no other option. While I would choose my son every single time without hesitation, the financial strain has become overwhelming. The appointments, travel, medical needs, and everyday expenses continue and the income has stopped.
We absolutely cannot do this alone.
He is alive. And we are fighting for his healing every single day.
Please help us get through this.
With love and gratitude,
Melissa Mae
