“Shall we make that a….scholarship?”
Paul Baltz was an English teacher at Stagg High School in Palos Hills for 30 years. During that time he changed the lives of hundreds and hundreds of students through his rigorous courses, innovative methods, and concern for the intellectual development and personal wellbeing of the young people in his classroom. There was no finer example of what it means to be a teacher than Mr. Baltz (The Paul).
As we learned of his passing this weekend we all started sharing stories of the many ways he impacted our lives and the way we live them. Per the obituary, a scholarship will be established in his name to benefit the students of Stagg High School. I created this fundraiser as an intermediary and a challenge. If just 10 people from each graduating class that Paul taught contributed $100, we could raise $30K by his memorial service on Saturday October 14th. That is by no means intended to establish a minimum - it was just the math I used to come up with an aspirational but achievable goal.
I reached out to Mr. Olsen, the principal at Stagg, and he will update me on the creation of the scholarship fund. Any funds collected will be turned over to the scholarship fund. Please don’t donate anonymously so that I can keep a record of all donors so that I can share information with you.
I set this up so that we do not lose momentum - the key to fundraising is to make it timely, fast and easy (and easy to share). For those of you who have no idea who I am and may be suspicious of contributing to a campaign organized by a stranger, I was in the Stagg HS class of 1991. I took two classes of Paul’s so I got to experience both IRQs and College Prep Writing. Both of which changed my life. Aside from that, my entire career has been in college access and finance - in other words: grants and scholarships. So, I have a lot of experience with scholarships and even more public accountability.
