Safe at the sanctuary at last!

 

Poor little girl. This small turtle named Spider can fit in your palm. She was in a home where the caregiver knew little about turtles and did little to educate herself. Spider and several other unhealthy turtles arrived at our hospital in bad shape. They were fed cat food and other damaging meals that led to very bumpy shells and potential early deaths. Spider was in the worst shape and, bless her heart, was spunky from the get-go. She started eating live worms and otter healthy foods, enjoyed swimming and drinking in a small water bowl and even learned to recognize me when I visit her and the others in the hospital every day. She is thriving even though she barely weighs just ounces.

Sadly, the majority of turtles and tortoises in the hospital and the sanctuary have histories of mistreatment - many owners did not deliberately cause problems...most are from ignorance. I am not sure why people do not do their homework when a turtle or tortoise joins the family, Often, when the animals are purchased at a pet store - not adopted through a rescue, they are given bad information (not necessarily by the salesperson).
