Therapy and Caregiving Expenses
Donation protected
In June 2011, an auto accident left me a quadriplegic with C6/C7 spinal cord injury, paralyzing me from the chest down and with partial hand paralysis. Before the accident, I worked as a veterinarian for 15 years. With the injury, I can no longer do this kind of work. I went back to school after the accident and earned a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration and am looking for work in my new field.
I depend on hired caregivers who assist me with necessary therapy and exercise including swimming, weight lifting, stretch band therapy, setting me up to ride an FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) bike, and come to regular therapy sessions with Physical and/or Occupational Therapists and to Doctors' appointments.
These caregivers utilize Hoyer lifts to get me in and out of bed, bathe and dress me, administer medications, and do my Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) or prepare ADL's like toothbrush for me to use. They also cook and clean and help run errands for me, and so much more.
For the past seven years, I have been paying personally out-of-pocket for all these care-giver expenses, using funds from settlement monies received from the accident. Those funds are now depleted, and I am reaching out for help.
