The Waysons Are Adopting!

We are excited to announce that the Lord has led us to become parents through adoption.
We are adopting through the Christian agency “Lifetime Adoption,” a process which can take from 3 months to 2 years. This is a new experience for us, and we would like to take a moment to share what we have learned about this process with you.
To adopt an infant in the US, it is possible to utilize an adoption agency, consultant, lawyer, adopt through the foster system, or privately if you happen to know someone placing their baby for adoption. After reviewing our available options, we decided that it was best for us and prospective birth mothers that we may be paired with to have the resources of an adoption agency. In the case of Lifetime Adoption, the agency provides education, counseling, and mental health services to the birth mother at no additional cost during and after her pregnancy. After researching many agencies nationwide, we found that services like these made Lifetime the best match for us. Our adoption coordinator, Jen, has been nothing short of fantastic for us in answering questions, concerns, and making herself available to us at all times with genuine care.
Even with a wonderful agency, adoption can be a very long and difficult journey both emotionally and financially. During the process, we have filled out preferences to match with a prospective birth mother. This has included what we would expect to be a good match for us, from age, race, amount of contact we are ok with the birth mother, amount of substance (drug, tobacco, alcohol, etc) usage during pregnancy, potential special needs, and birth mother expenses (medical, maternity clothing) we can afford to help support. From these preferences, prospective birth mothers may or may not select us as adoptive parents for their child. We do not select the child we adopt. As you can imagine, this requires a lot of faith, and we trust that God will lead the parent(s) of our future child to choose us when the timing is right.
In addition to adoption preferences, and our selection as adoptive parents, there are a variety of financial and bureaucratic requirements along the way. To begin the process, we will sign our contract with Lifetime and pay the contract fee ($24,000). This provides both us and the prospective birth mother with all agency services, from adoption profile creation (for us), adoption education (for us and the birth mother), adoption preparation programs (for us and the birth mother), as well as counseling, care packages, scholarship and education opportunities, and more for the birth mother. Once we sign the contract and pay the fee, we can then begin a home study through a social care agency. In our case, A Family Tree - Hawaii is the only agency servicing our region. The home study can take several months and costs an additional $4,500. Once the home study is complete and we are matched with a prospective birth mother, we are responsible for all attorney fees in our state and the birth mother's state. These fees can range from $6,000 - $12,000 depending on the state our birth mother is from. We have also budgeted several thousand dollars to assist our birth mother with medical fees, maternity clothing, food, and medication during pregnancy. Not every birth mother needs financial assistance, but we do not want the expense of pregnancy to be the thing that prevents a prospective birth mother from giving birth to her child. Once we are matched, we anticipate to travel 1-2 weeks ahead of the baby's due date to spend some time with the birth mother and be present for the birth of our future child. Because flights from/to Hawaii are expensive, we anticipate this cost will be $3,000 or more. In total, costs for our adoption amount to approximately $43,000. While this seems like a daunting number to pay up front, God has always provided in every part of our lives, and will continue to do so. Please do not feel obligated to give. The purpose of this was to share with you the intricacies of our journey, so you can better understand what we are going through, and how to pray with and for us. Your love and prayer is worth more to us than any amount of money!
We are thankful to have you in our lives and are looking forward to taking you on this journey with us.
Much Love,
Brant and Liesa
