The Big Swim - Tobago to Trinidad 45km

Donation protected
My name is Johnny Procope, and I am a 47-year-old diver from Trinidad and Tobago. I am reaching out to you today with an exciting opportunity that I believe aligns perfectly with extraordinary endeavors while at the same time making a positive impact on our society, and importantly, bringing awareness to ocean conservation efforts in Trinidad and Tobago.

Back in 1996, I stumbled upon a captivating legend that ignited my passion for an incredible challenge - swimming the ocean channel between Trinidad and Tobago. The legend tells the story of a brave slave who escaped his captors on a plantation in Tobago and successfully crossed the treacherous sea to Trinidad. Ever since learning about this tale, I have been captivated by the idea of undertaking this formidable swim.

To date, only one person has claimed to have completed this 45-kilometer swim successfully, but unfortunately, there is no concrete evidence to substantiate their achievement. Several other swimmers have attempted this awe-inspiring challenge, but none have succeeded. Last September, I was part of a group of four individuals who courageously ventured into the channel. Despite swimming for over 10 hours straight and covering a distance of 45 kilometers, we were thwarted by unfavorable weather conditions.

Undeterred by this setback, I have set my sights on swimming solo, the channel between Trinidad and Tobago, aiming for a date as close to, or on Thursday, August 10th. I plan to commence the swim during high tide, with the first six or seven hours during the night. Although the precise date and start time will depend on the ever-changing weather and sea conditions, this timeframe represents the window I am targeting.

I am writing to humbly request your sponsorship for this historic endeavor. The success of this challenge relies heavily on the support of dedicated individuals and organizations such as the Institute of Marine Affairs. I believe there are others such as myself, with values and commitments to making positive impacts on ocean conservation, who will align perfectly with the goals of this swim, and may wish to contribute to making the success a reality.

To ensure a safe and successful journey, I will be accompanied by two support boats, each equipped with a team of professionals. These individuals will provide crucial assistance throughout the swim, including regular feeding and hydration every 45 minutes, efficient navigation, capturing the adventure through GoPro and drone footage, documenting the achievement with photos, and offering essential medical support. Given the expected duration of the swim, which could exceed 20 hours depending on the currents, each support vessel requires a budget of $10,000. Hence, I am seeking a total sponsorship of $20,000 to cover these expenses.

Your contribution, no matter the amount, would be immensely appreciated. As a dedicated sponsor, your support will play a pivotal role in making this extraordinary feat possible.

In addition to achieving a personal milestone, I am extremely passionate about using this endeavor as a platform to raise awareness about climate change and ocean preservation. These urgent issues directly impact our nation's food security and require collective action. By swimming across the channel, I aim to shed light on the importance of preserving our oceans and inspire positive change in our society.

Furthermore, I intend to leverage this historical feat to advocate for increased support from the Government and corporations of Trinidad and Tobago for our young athletes. Investing in grassroots programs, beginner and learn-to-swim initiatives, and providing the necessary backing for our representatives will help nurture talent and ensure our country's success on the global stage.

I genuinely appreciate your time and consideration in reviewing my sponsorship request. I firmly believe that together, we can make history, raise awareness, and create a lasting impact. If you require any additional information or would like to discuss this opportunity further, please do hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Johnny Procope
