Emma Rose Fenwick is a beautiful 17 year old girl who loves life and expresses her faith in God through her music and art. A junior in high school, Emma is very involved in her church community where she serves as leader of the youth band. Emma plays guitar, piano, and drums, using her musical talents to compose and perform music praising her Heavenly Father. Her work inspires all who know her.
In the fall of 2015, Emma became too ill to continue attending school, church, and other activities. A scan revealed that her gall bladder needed to be removed. After the surgery, she continued to struggle. Many tests over several months and her doctors were still puzzled with the cause of her illness. She was referred to and admitted to Shands on February 24th where she underwent extensive testing by a team of pediatric specialists. On March 7, Emma was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer that affects about 1 out of 300,000 children. It is highly treatable.
Emma has elected to participate in an experimental drug study that could help her, as well as further the likelihood of a complete recovery for future children affected by this and similar cancers. For those of us who know Emma, this choice comes as no surprise. It is simply another testament to her faith in God as the author of her story and her willingness to be an instrument for His glory.
We are humbled by the overwhelming support from family, friends, and complete strangers. It seems these days that cancer affects families more than ever. It is unlikely that our assets alone will sustain the expenses of the full course of treatment and continue to allow us to be by her side through this journey.
