Swimming for Typhoon Shelter Kids

Children of families left homeless after Super Typhoon Yutu devastated Saipan on October 29th are living in shelters until their families can find housing. The island's schools are also shut down for repairs that could take months leaving the kids with little to do but wait in the shelters while their parents are working or dealing with the crisis.

We are 500 Sails, a Saipan non-profit that works to revive traditional canoe culture.  This includes teaching swimming, sailing and canoe building. We have organized a team of swim teachers, lifeguards and swimmers to  take the kids out of the shelters for a break and a chance to have some fun while learning how to swim. Many of the volunteers are high school age swimmers who are anxious to help. We will provide a caravan of cars to transport the kids to the swim lessons that will take place at the beach behind the 500 Sails canoe house.

We are starting right away, but need help to pay for materials to repair our canoe house roof, to get the restrooms and showers working again, and to pay for gas for the cars. With the roof repaired we can do more for the kids and even add sailing lessons and rides on traditional canoes.

The program is open to all school age kids. We will expand transportation beyond the shelters as soon as possible to reach kids not in the shelters but also not in school. This is a great opportunity to bring some relief to these kids while at the same time allowing them learn to swim - a lifetime skill that is not taught in the public schools. With your help we will teach hundreds of kids to swim!

Let's do this!
