Hello!
My name is Sam Rachwal and as many of you may know, I am a surgical technologist in Pittsburgh, PA. As a surgical technologist, I am in charge of setting up all the instrumentation and supplies for surgery, making sure everything remains sterile during the surgery, passing instruments, and first assisting the surgeon by retracting, grasping tissue, cauterizing, and applying dressings. I love that I get to help people and save lives every day behind the scenes in the operating room. Every day in the operating room is different, exciting, and rewarding. Throughout the past few years, I have been thinking of ways that I can make an even bigger impact on people's lives and gain invaluable experience.
I have been selected for an amazing opportunity to be able to go on a surgical mission trip with Surgicorps International to Zambia, Africa in April 2024. "Surgicorps International provides free surgical and medical care to people in need in developing countries" (https://surgicorps.org/about/). A team and I will bring all the supplies necessary for life-changing surgeries for children with congenital deformities, burns, and other disabilities that make everyday life a challenge. All surgeries and care will be free for all patients.
Because this is a smaller, non-profit organization offering pro-bono care, it is my responsibility to pay for my flights, accommodations, and meals. Please consider donating to help me cover these expenses. I would be very appreciative of anyone who would consider donating a little bit or even just sharing my post.
This is going to be a very humbling and life-changing opportunity, and I hope that this is just the start of my journey to help people all over the world.
If you would like to learn about Surgicorps International and what their mission is, here is their website and Facebook page.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read about my trip!
