Supporting Whiskey’s Road to Recovery
Donation protected
On 8/17, Whiskey was hurt in a terrible accident. This adventurous pup was enjoying a day at a local rock climbing spot when a rock slide was triggered. Poor Whiskey was in the direct path, unable to move fast enough before getting hit by a small boulder. It was quickly discovered that his front right paw was crushed on impact, causing an open fracture with arterial bleeding. His owner and friends rushed into action using the gear available to apply a tourniquet and wrap the wound, but bleeding still continued. He initially could not be safely moved, so El Paso Search and Rescue was called to safely extricate him. But when we were told it could be hours, four people ended up assisting Whiskey down the steep and now very loose approach as time was a critical factor with the amount of bleeding. Two partners were able to meet the group partway down and further assist with carrying him before eventually meeting with Search and Rescue. The El Paso team surprised us with a speedy response time and further stabilized Whiskey for his owner and friends to get him to the nearest emergency vet for treatment. We cannot thank the El Paso Search and Rescue team enough.
Whiskey was further stabilized at the ER, but they recommended he transfer to specialists in northern Colorado for the best treatment. As it stands, Whiskey should be able to keep his front right paw. But he required extensive imaging, medications, and treatment. It’s anticipated that he will require intensive rehab and physical therapy for a full recovery as well. This teddy bear of a dog is deeply loved by his community and quickly wins the hearts of new company with his sweet and loving temperament. We are so lucky that he’s expected to make a full recovery, but it will be a significant financial burden on his owners.
We are kindly asking for any donations so Whiskey can regain his full independence and quality of life as the active dog that he is! Having completed a 4-Peak 14er loop the day before the accident and several 14ers and multi-day backpacking trips in years past, this dog lives for the outdoors and thrives on adventure! He truly is the perfect adventurous companion an owner could ask for. His owner is doing everything possible to maximize his chances for a full recovery and would greatly appreciate any donations or anyone who takes the time to read this.
