A decade ago, my dear friend Marcus met Hélène, and they instantly became a family built on love and mutual support for their three children. Just one week after they met, Hélène was diagnosed with breast cancer. For the past ten years, Marcus has stood by her side as she has bravely fought a relentless battle that later saw the cancer metastasise to her lung and brain.
What followed was a journey of unimaginable strength. Hélène has endured countless treatments, multiple surgeries, and has received Stereotactic Radiotherapy for over 90 brain lesions - more than any other patient at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Without the incredible support of the NHS, Hélène would have passed away many years ago.
Marcus has devoted himself to caring for Hélène, turning down many work opportunities so he could be at her side and be there for their three children. This choice, born purely out of love, has also come with heavy financial hardship.
As a family, they made a difficult but beautiful choice. They began to treat every birthday and every Christmas as if it might be the last. They spent their income creating lasting memories and living every moment to the fullest, choosing to prioritise today's happiness over tomorrow's problems.
Because of this, they were unable to secure a mortgage and have had to rent. They initially lived in a three-bedroom house, but as the children got older and needed their own space, they moved to a five-bedroom house to accommodate their family's needs. The current house is not cheap, but as it needs a lot of maintenance, it's an incredibly reasonable price for the area and allows the children to have the stability they need.
Now, as Hélène enters the final stages of her illness, the weight of lost income, mounting expenses, and the emotional toll on their family have become overwhelming. Marcus has reached a point where he needs help so he can be fully present for Hélène and their children without the added stress of financial worry.
We are asking for your help to support Marcus and his three children during this heartbreaking time. These funds will go toward paying off existing debts, covering essential living costs and providing comfort and stability. Your support will help cover these crucial expenses for the next few months while Marcus has a limited capacity to work.
It’s also important that the family can spend this precious time together without the added stress of financial insecurity.
Every contribution, no matter the size, will help lighten their burden and allow Marcus to focus on what matters most: being with Hélène and caring for their children. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this campaign with others.
On behalf of Hélène, Marcus, and their family, thank you for your kindness, compassion, and support.
