On February 15, 2023, at 29 years old, my wonderful sister-in-law, Emily, was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of Triple Negative Breast Cancer. What began as a relatively unassuming ER visit for persistent headaches on February 8th quickly escalated into a series of tests and procedures resulting in her dire diagnosis just one week later. Emily is currently in oncological inpatient care in Portland, Oregon, approximately 2 hours from her home in Astoria.

Emily earned her degree in Wildlife Sciences from The Ohio State University in 2016 and has since exercised her passion for natural science across the country in Ohio, North Carolina, and Oregon, most recently through her GIS study of Elk populations for the National Park Service. In just a few weeks, she was ecstatic to plan to return to her true passion – avian species – with a Master’s research project for the University of Kentucky. Emily is a loving partner, daughter, sister, and caring dog mom. Everyone who knows Emily knows her infectious enthusiasm, and the wonderful ease of her friendship and love.

Emily has already begun chemotherapy in Portland, but may be relocated to Ohio in the coming weeks to pursue the best possible care nearer to her family home in Columbus. With relocation, however, comes more challenges, including navigation of insurance coverage, and we, as her family and friends, are determined that money should in no way factor into her decision to receive the care she needs.

Your generosity and support would allow Emily to focus on what matters most: her health. Donated funds will be used to cover:

• Medical expenses and premiums

• Procedures needed to diagnose and treat

• Prescriptions

• Travel to and from care facilities for Emily and loved ones

• Loss of income while Emily undergoes treatment
