We are raising funds for Tommy Benedetti, a dear friend, professional musician, and bike courier, who has recently been through an incredibly difficult medical crisis. Tommy has been the drummer for John Brown’s Body for over 30 years, as well as playing with Dub Apocalypse, Organically Good Trio and many others over the years.
On Sunday August 16, as he was pulling up to his weekly gig in Somerville, MA, coming from an earlier gig that day on Cape Cod, Tommy had a seizure, causing him to crash his car onto the sidewalk. Thankfully nobody was hurt, though his car was totaled, and Tommy woke up in the ER at Mass General Hospital. Subsequent tests revealed that surgery was needed to address the cause of the seizure. He was released from the ER on Monday, but returned to MGH on Saturday, August 22 for surgery. The surgery went well, and Tommy was discharged from the ICU on Monday afternoon, August 24.
Since then, he has been home resting and recovering, under the care of his wife Alex, their cat Oliver, family, friends, and colleagues. It has been an extremely difficult month, dealing with the shock and aftermath of the accident, surgery, and being unable to do the things he loves most: playing drums and cycling.
While he has been recovering well from the surgery, there are still unknowns in the near future and beyond. These unknowns make it very difficult to know when Tommy will be able to return to work behind the kit and on the bike. He has already lost about a month of work and is facing the likelihood of significant medical bills, including the ambulance, ER, ICU, MRIs, and surgery.
For more than 3 decades, Tommy has been a touring musician, gracing stages around the world and continuing to record music that has brought joy, comfort, and inspiration to so many people. Now, Tommy needs that same community of care in return.
Donations will help cover medical bills, the loss of his vehicle, and everyday living expenses while Tommy focuses on healing and regaining strength.
