Men’s Sheds are part of a global movement, with local sheds operating in communities all over the world. Their purpose is simple but powerful: to provide a welcoming space where men can connect, learn new skills, share knowledge, and support one another through meaningful activity and friendship.

I came to truly appreciate the impact of Men’s Sheds through seeing how valuable they can be for men in my own community. Like many people, the COVID period brought significant change to everyday life, particularly for those who had spent years working and contributing in hands on ways. Having access to a place that offers routine, purpose, and connection can make a real difference during times of transition.

Since becoming involved in his local Men’s Shed, my father has found a strong sense of community. He now attends several times a week, taking part in practical projects that give back to the area, as well as social and wellbeing activities such as gardening, lawn bowls, and even Pilates. What stands out most is the positive, welcoming environment and the sense of belonging the Shed provides.

This experience has shown me just how important spaces like the Tullyallen Men’s Shed are. A dedicated games room would offer another opportunity for connection, inclusion, and enjoyment; a place where men can relax, socialise, and support one another in a safe and friendly setting.

On May 3rd, I’ll be running the Vancouver Full Marathon to support this incredible organisation, and I’d be grateful for any support, big or small.
