Support Materials Science Camps for New England Youth

The New England chapters of ASM International – the world’s largest association of materials-centric engineers and scientists – is raising funds for four annual educational camps for high school students and high school teachers. Read more about the two camps and what your support means for these camps below.
ASM Materials Experience New England is a hands-on program for high school students to explore materials science and engineering. Through interactive learning modules and demonstrations presented by expert volunteers from industry and academia, students learn about the properties and uses of various materials like metals, polymers, and ceramics. The program fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills while highlighting potential career paths in science, engineering and manufacturing, all while showcasing the importance of materials in everyday life.

The Boston and Central Massachusetts Chapters of ASM International host two annual events at Boston University (BU) and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) with support from the universities, professors, industry professionals, and ASM International graduate student chapters. Up to 120 students attend annually from a variety of New England area schools including public, private, home, and vocational. This camp is 100% covered by the fundraising efforts of the local ASM chapters. The cost of the camp is approximately $70 per student and 100% of the funds go towards expenses such as materials and equipment, T-shirts, and lunch for students and volunteers. Our goal this year is to raise $7,000. See this year’s camp information and prior years’ pictures here: https://www.asmboston.org/2025-materials-experience.html

ASM's Materials Camp for teachers is a hands-on professional development program that enhances educators' understanding of materials science. Participants engage in experiments and discussions in this weeklong program, gaining innovative teaching strategies and resources to integrate materials science into their curriculum in their own classrooms. The camp empowers teachers to inspire their students and foster a deeper appreciation for the subject. These camps carry significant costs including ASM-trained Master Teachers on-site for instruction, significant laboratory supplies (that teachers get to take back to their schools for the next year’s classes), and, in some cases, housing costs so teachers can travel and stay near the camp venue. To help defray these large costs, our goal for this year is to raise $10,000.
