We are The Portland Frog Brigade, a collective of inflatable frogs and our human allies who show up to protests, town halls, and community events to model what peaceful, joyful resistance looks like.
The first frog stood in front of the ICE detention center and was pepper-sprayed for it. The image went viral not because it was violent, but because it was absurdly beautiful: a giant green frog standing calmly in the face of power. That moment inspired a movement.
Since then, we have been using humor, art, and creativity to de-escalate tension, shift narratives, and bring joy back into civic life. Our mission is simple:
- Model and teach peaceful protest through art and absurdity.
- Support others fighting for justice, democracy, and human dignity.
- Lower the on-ramp to participation by making activism safe, family-friendly, and fun.
- Build a recognizable symbol of nonviolent artivism, so that when people see the frogs, they know what we stand for: peace, compassion, and courage.
