I started a project with my partner John in rural Cambodia called Cambodia Farmers Cooperative to help farmers create better lives by supporting their agricultural efforts. Our partner Charina, who lives in Cambodia handles all the financial matters and the cooperative.  Charina gives us a deep understanding of all the different cultural aspects of Cambodia we may not be attuned to. She is our guiding light in this development project.

We provide finances to the farmers to buy their first cow and raise them. As the cows mature and females have babies, another opportunity is created for farmers to increase their livestock and at the same time, increase their income. 

In initiating the project, we also wanted to help the children of the farmers in rural Cambodia. What we thought would work best is to work with a local NGO that is already involved in building schools for children called Cambodia Children’s Advocacy Foundation Organization (CCAFO).

The Children’s Advocacy Foundation Organization (CCAFO) is a Cambodian Non-Governmental Organization established in 2006 by founder Chanarith Hing to provide a means to educate children and reduce poverty by addressing its root causes. Their mission is to help vulnerable children and families by utilizing village based preschools. These preschools provide foreign language training, life skill training, primary health care, nutritious meals and scholarships with an emphasis on children’s rights.

The initial funds from this campaign will go to support the printing of textbooks and purchase of urgently needed materials for teachers.

Additionally, the funds may be used to help pay for teachers salaries in the summer months. Teachers work for an average of $150 a month and now only get paid 9 months out of the year. 

Our phase one goal is $1650. 

I will do a second phase to raise money for teacher training and to serve the children of our farmers at Cambodia Farmers’ Cooperative. My goal for the second phase is $1000. 

Later on, we will create a scholarship fund to support students in rural areas who cannot otherwise attend college.
