My name is Mark Spivey, and my wife’s name is Destiny Spivey. I am writing on behalf of my family and our baby boy, Samir. We are reaching out in a time of great need, humbly asking for support..
On January 13, 2025, my wife and I moved to Texas so she could be closer to family during her pregnancy. She was six months along at the time. Not long after arriving, she was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a dangerous condition involving high blood pressure in pregnancy. On January 27, she was admitted to the hospital, where she remained under close care.
On February 9, Destiny required an emergency C-section because her kidneys were failing and our son’s heart rate was dropping. Samir was born weighing only 1 pound 8 ounces — so tiny he could fit in the palm of my hand. He has been in the NICU ever since, fighting every day with incredible strength. Over the months, Samir has endured many challenges, including receiving a tracheostomy to help him breathe. Thankfully, he has improved and is now doing well enough that doctors believe he can come home with us on a home ventilator. However, we have hit a difficult obstacle. Home health services require that Samir have his own bathroom, so nurses don’t have to enter other rooms while providing his care. Unfortunately, our current apartment doesn’t meet that requirement, and the rent and fees here are already overwhelming. Between high rent, daily hospital parking fees, medical bills, gas for traveling to the hospital every other day, and limited insurance coverage, our finances are completely stretched. We want nothing more than to bring our baby home so he can continue growing and living outside of the NICU. But to do that, we need help relocating to a more affordable home that meets his medical needs. If anyone can help us during this time — whether through financial assistance, resources, housing leads, or even sharing our story — it would mean the world to us. Every bit of help brings us closer to being together as a family.
