I am Ron Ford, an award-winning filmmaker with 30 years professional experience. I am most known for writing the 1994 hit THE FEAR. I also wrote and directed more than a dozen features, including HOLLYWOOD MORTUARY, WITHCRAFT XI and THE MARK OF DRACULA. But this project is something different. It is not a genre tale, but more of an uplifting character drama called UNDER GLASS. It is based on a short story by a close friend of mine, the late Tim Sullivan, which was published in Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine, Nov/Dec 2011. It is the story of a man who must come to grips with the death of an eccentric but very dear friend (a character based on a mutual friend we both held dear) when he is made executor of the friend's estate. He inherits a Mason jar which, he is told, contains the soul of his late friend. Now, he is a confirmed atheist, so he disbelieves there is anything in the jar. Yet the decision of whether or not to open the jar and release his friend's soul becomes the crux of his dilemma, which is finally resolved in a heartbreaking and ambiguous climax that will not be soon forgotten. This story was very close to Tim, and he asked me specifically to make a film of it. I feel a responsibility to carry out my friend's wish, but also the story speaks to my heart, and I would want to make this film anyway.
