Jamaica faced catastrophic devastation from Hurricane Melissa for over 48 hours of flooding rains, 195+ mph winds, and significant storm surge. This has left most of the island without power, passable roads, food, water, and other resources.
Adam and I have an amazing friend that lives on the island. We met him on our first ever trip to Jamaica and he quickly became like family to us. We learned the way of true Jamaicans from him. He has been so positive and optimistic about life even after the devastation, not knowing what is going to happen.
While on a video chat tonight (he was sitting in the dark), we were told to not expect to have electricity restored until late 2025 or early 2026. This is beyond unimaginable. Imagine not having a refrigerator for 3 months in 90+ degree heat; most don't own generators. The resort he worked at prior to the hurricane is now closed until further notice. Many have lost their tourism jobs due to Melissa. He is now awaiting a call from a cruise line in the USA to report for duty. Until then, it's a daily struggle to rebuild, find food, water, and resources. We look forward to him working in the US in the future so he can come visit Indiana and bring some Jamaican flavors to our kitchen!
All funds will be directly sent to him to provide support for food, rebuilding and repairing his roof, and to help provide for his family.
