My name is S, I am a resident of Lower Allston, and a friend and neighbor of C and M, whose story I'll share below with their permission. I'm also a community organizer with a handful of organizations in the neighborhood.

C, M, and their children have lived in Lower Allston since they moved here from El Salvador 7 years ago. After all 7 years in the same apartment, our landlords (owners of a local dry cleaning business) are refusing to renew C and M's lease. As an immigrant family, C and M have done all they could to be good tenants. However, paying rent on time and in cash, handling snow and trash removal, and not complaining about unsafe and out of compliance conditions did not protect them from the landlords' sudden decision to kick them out with only a few months notice. Now that C and M have called the city inspector about waterlogged and moldy ceilings in the bathroom and family bedroom, cockroaches, a broken extractor fan in the kitchen, faulty radiators and other compliance issues, several members of the landlords family have been showing up unannounced to yell at the family. C and M understand the landlords' refusal to bring the apartment into good condition, and their refusal to renew their lease, is an act of racism, especially since people in the other two apartments (myself included) were not told to leave.
Before, C and M just wanted the landlords to address these compliance issues and to remain tenants in good standing, but after the verbal abuse and gaslighting from the landlord and their extended family (daughter, brother), they are looking for safe and long-term accommodations in the area where they work and send their children to school. As renters with a large family, and only weeks of notice, C and M need financial support to move. Their current apartment is $3,000 for 3 bedrooms, and they hope to find something similar. The funds from this GoFundMe will go toward paying First Month, Last Month, and Security Deposit for their new home. If you've ever moved in Boston, you know unexpected costs come up, so this is the bare minimum to help them land safely. If you've ever moved with your whole family, you know how difficult it can be to find an apartment for everyone that won't negatively affect school and work.

In Allston, and the Boston area, many of us do what we can to support our immigrant neighbors. This is a moment for us to each help a little bit to make a big positive impact for C and M. With conditions in Allston getting harder for immigrants, including being cut off from SNAP EBT benefits, losing loved ones to ICE raids, and increased racism from landlords, we can all make a difference in our neighbors lives.

Please contribute what you can, and share with friends and neighbors.
