Help Michael With Travel & Recovery for Medically Crucial Neurosurgery

My name is Christy, and I’m raising funds to support my adult son, Michael. We live in Kenai, Alaska, and the medically crucial surgery he needs — replacement of his failing shunt system and treatment for the compression on his brain — must be done in February 2026 at the University of Washington in Seattle, the closest medical center capable of handling his complex case.

Michael has lived with hydrocephalus for most of his life. His current shunt system is no longer working, and the neurosurgery team at UW has determined these procedures are necessary to keep him safe and prevent serious complications.

⭐ Why We Must Remain in Seattle During Recovery

Recovery can take 2–5 weeks or longer, and since his recovery will be complicated and arduous, he will need care 24/7 during this time. He will also need to remain close to the UW medical center for close monitoring, management of any post-surgical complications, and follow-up visits.

Because we are traveling from Alaska, Michael cannot fly home until his neurosurgeon clears him. Flying too soon poses risks due to pressure changes and the need for close postoperative monitoring.

Medicaid travel assistance was denied for this trip. While we don’t agree with the decision, we are moving forward with the care Michael needs.

The denial followed Alaska Medicaid’s contracted utilization review process through an out-of-state third-party reviewer. That process does not determine whether Michael receives surgery — it only determines travel assistance.

His medical team has been clear about the need for this procedure, and we are focused on getting him safely to the care he requires.
