We live in Kenai, Alaska, and the medically crucial surgery he needs — replacement of his failing shunt system and treatment for the compression on his brain — must be done in February 2026 at the University of Washington in Seattle, the closest medical center capable of handling his complex case.

<div>Recovery can take 2–5 weeks or longer, and since his recovery will be complicated and arduous, he will need care 24/7 during this time. He will also need to remain close to the UW medical center for close monitoring, management of any post-surgical complications, and follow-up visits.

<div>Because we are traveling from Alaska, Michael cannot fly home until his neurosurgeon clears him. Flying too soon poses risks due to pressure changes and the need for close postoperative monitoring.
