Hi, my name is Nabomita and I am fundraising for my mother who is recovering from a multi-organ failure. A few weeks ago, my mother complained of discomfort from a racing heartbeat, swollen legs, and restlessness. Just like many other people who are suffering, the COVID crisis in India made it equally worse for us to get a doctor to see her. After 24 hours, as her heartbeat rose to 175/min, we had no other choice but to rush her to the emergency. She immediately underwent several tests.

What started with a simple catheterization and a chest x-ray with some signs of pneumonia, things took a drastic turn in the next 6 hours. With an erratic heartbeat and a racing pulse of 200 and more/min, she was rushed to the ICU. She had to be immediately plugged into several machines and put on high-dose medications for her heart, kidney, and liver. As the doctors strived to find out the underlying reason for her sudden deterioration, they ran more tests and found that her heart was functioning at only 10-15% compromising the oxygen and blood supply to all other major organs. She was declared as having a multi-organ failure due to:

• severe sepsis

• AKI UTI

• heart failure

• liver dysfunction

• congestive hepatitis

• pneumonia

• cardiomegaly

• and right hemiparesis with no more than a few hours to survive.

Her situation was and is still extremely delicate and critical for any extreme treatment such as a pacemaker surgery. Each time her heart struggled to pump; she was given cardio shocks to revive her heart until the doctors exhausted their medical protocol of 5 consecutive electric shocks. Seven days after her hospitalization, she had a major heart attack as her pulse rose to 275/min and she went flat-line for 22 seconds. Just as she was about to be declared deceased, there was a pulse! She remained unconscious for days but to my content, my mother was back.

All the fine doctors of the hospital gave up on her and said she would remain a vegetable all her life or may take her last breath at any moment. They had no medical treatment left in their capacity to help her recover from the effects of sepsis, cardiomegaly, and multi-organ failure. As we were at our wit's end to manage finances with soaring hospital bills within days, the doctors asked us to sign a disclaimer of Discharge Against Medical Advice (DAMA) and get her home. It is with a lot of fear, guilt, and faith in God, that we managed to bring my mom home.

In a matter of a week, my healthy mother went from being seemingly fine to a state where I wouldn’t be able to see her anymore as flights to and from India have been indefinitely suspended due to COVID. Every day since that day has been a nightmare fearing what may be coming next. While she and other members of our family have been blessed with prayers to not have contracted COVID and still have my mother with us, this long battle is far from being won, at this point. My mother is currently bedridden, recovering at home with oxygen, plenty of medications, and a 24-hour nurse's support. She is being fed through a nasal tube and is on a limited liquid diet of 1.2L/day for a month now.

Although she has shown some signs of improvement in the past week, her condition is still delicate. It will take months before she can eat solid food orally or be able to take her first step again. My mom’s sudden illness, the financial deficit caused due to the pandemic and her limited savings is the reason why I take the courage and humility to start this fundraiser to support her medical treatment, with projections for at least the next 6 months.

Your generous support of whatever you may be comfortable with will help me cover her medical bills, her 24-hour nursing care, provide the best resources to help her gain strength, and get her back on her feet in the next 8-10 months. This would also relieve us of some financial pressure and help me focus on her continued care and well-being. Owing to the fact that she has the strong will to live and not many of us get a second chance at life, this is the least and also the most I, as her daughter, can do to support her treatment and recovery.

For your reference, I have attached the hospital bills that explain her case. Along with it is a spreadsheet that has a detailed projection of her medical needs for the next 6 months based on the expenses fulfilled for the first month in INR, USD, and CAD.

If you are donating from India and would like to transfer directly, kindly send your donation to the below account and drop me a note. This will allow me to adjust the campaign amount accordingly.
