Lori is a stroke survivor, permanently disabled since 2015, and relies on social security benefits. Although she receives benefits, unforeseen circumstances have made it impossible to pay bills and rent, putting housing and stability at risk.

In June 2024, Lori went to Washington State to care for her mother, who later passed away. This made it impossible to work or pay for an apartment, leading to the loss of her apartment. After storing belongings, Lori was able to secure a spot in a subsidized housing program and paid the first and last month's deposit.

However, difficulties continued. Two days later, her car was towed, costing over $700 and depleting funds. Three days after that, the car was stolen, leaving Lori without transportation.

As a pet caregiver, Lori depends on a car to visit clients. Determined to fulfill commitments, all available credit was used, relying on Zipcar, Uber, Lyft, and public transport to continue daily visits. Weeks later, the car was found in Oakland, completely stripped and deemed a total loss.

Gap insurance took six months to process. During this time, payments on the stolen vehicle were still required, straining resources. To keep working, a new car was leased, adding a monthly payment of $790. Street parking at the new supportive housing location led to parking tickets and added financial stress adding $1280.

The gap insurance settlement did not cover the full balance, leaving a $4900 debt. In addition, the social security benefit was reduced by $600 monthly due to an overpayment, leaving Lori unable to cover expenses beyond rent. Now, facing eviction and potential homelessness, help is needed to regain stability.
