SUPPORT PRODUCTION OF OUR SHORT FILM 'LA AMBULANCIA': SCALING OUR AWARD-WINNING VISION.
My son Serge and I are the team behind the 2024 short film El Neceser Rojo. I wrote and adapted the short story, and we independently produced the film on a self-funded $1,000 budget. It premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, won Best Short Film at the Guanajuato International Film Festival, and qualified for the 2025 Academy Awards.
La Ambulancia is our ambitious next chapter. We are adapting another of my short autofiction stories, continuing our work in hybrid documentary and fiction storytelling to explore intergenerational memory, silence, and survival.
The Film:
La Ambulancia is a 15-minute film that maps the life of Artemisa—Azalea's mother and Serge's grandmother—through two near-death events. Framed not as traumas but as points in an emotional ledger, the film explores single motherhood and the inheritance of survival through a blend of observational realism and forensic stillness. Told from a daughter's perspective and framed through a mother-grandson lens, it documents a woman navigating constrained agency. The approach rejects melodrama, balancing reconstruction and fiction to examine unspoken tensions within patriarchal systems.
Mission:
I was awarded an Amplifi Napa Valley Fellowship, which includes a $10,000 grant that will support both the goals of this project and my continued artistic development into screenwriting and directing as I step into the co-directing seat with Serge. These funds will scale up our production in three key ways:
1. Shooting on 35mm film to establish a precise, materially grounded visual language.
2. Professionalizing the production pipeline by shooting on Cooke S4 lenses and planning for a full, high-end post-production workflow.
3. Completing post-production to an international exhibition standard, including 35mm negative processing and 4K scanning, color grading, and final sound mix and master.
This investment is crucial for building on the foundation of El Neceser Rojo and ensuring this new work reaches its fullest potential.
Please Note: In accordance with GoFundMe's terms, we cannot offer gifts, raffles, or promotions in exchange for donations. Your support is nonetheless vital, and every contributor will be thanked by name in the film's credits.
Production is scheduled for early 2026, with an international festival run to follow.
Join us in bringing this next chapter to life.
Many thanks,
Azalea & Serge
