Health insurance never covers all the costs of dealing with a medical crisis. There are always ancillary expenses in caring for a loved one, for instance: co-payments for medications & doctor visits, special foods, supplies, parking/transportation, time lost at work……. 
The list goes on and on and can add up quickly.
