Don protégé
We love our wonderful community and are excited to relaunch the online magazine with new stories about how people survive the world's toughest challenges, as well as our often pro bono support for humanitarian, health, and peace allies.
Like before, we aim elevate voices which can help bring positive energy and illustrate solutions in creative engaging ways. Therefore, we call on your support as we get back on the world stage!
We are celebrating our fifteenth anniversary! As you may remember, our work has been covered by the BBC, CNN, VICE, WNYC, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, Aljazeera, and press in a number of other languages and countries. In the past, we worked with the UN, Embassies, Adeso Africa, and many others. We brought you:
- Humanitarian Bazaar Magazine (aka HELO Magazine, ft. storytellers Fatima Jibrell, Tim Hetherington, Brendan Bannon, Lindsay Stark, Nate Miller, and artist interviews including The Dresden Dolls, Henry Rollins, Sierra Leone All Stars, Gato Loco Coconino, Yula Beeri, and more);
- Somali Sunrise Concert Tour for Peace (Somalia, Kenya, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and United States, ft. Waayaha Cusub, K'naan, Desiigner, Alsarah, Kombo Chokwe & Afro Simba, Ariana Delawari, Qais Essar, Neelamjit Dhillon, Uppanotch, Toni Blackman, and more);
- Mogadishu Music Festival (aka Somali Reconciliation Festival in Mogadishu, Somalia, ft. Waayaha Cusub and many of those above):
- Journey of Peace (Kenya, ft. Waayaha Cusub, Afro Simba, Alsarah)
- Sound Central Festival (Af, created and led by Travis Beard & Combat Comms, we helped with promotions, side events, and creative advice for musicians)
- And creative support to filmmakers including Edet Belzberg's Watchers of the Sky, Monzer Darwish's Syrian Metal is Wr, Travis Beard's RocKabul, and more).
- And yes, we had to go offline sometimes primarily for safety but also as our founder had health trouble. Now we are ready to get back on the world stage, so we really need your help to cover urgent and core costs as described below.
So we have overwhelming evidence of our great stories and projects, especially those we created with allies. With your help we will cover this urgent gap as we plan for new funding to arrive in the coming months.
Our founder covered most core costs for the last years, so we would like to restore our former coordination of shared support like an arts community. Here is what we need. Thank you! ===>
- Story payments and special needs grants for our storytellers and allies in tough situations, especially women in challenging situations where they want to share their story and earn something faster than our long term budget allows;
- Reimbursements for team members who helped pay emergency and core costs in the past year who are now struggling;
- Web hosting and urls
- Gear and file storage
- Software including Adobe Suite+
- Legal registration and insurance fees
- (none of this goes to salaries, only story payments, special needs grants, and core costs which will be overseen by our advisory group)
- Thanks to all who shared their stories and helped along the way!
Peace, love, and cardamom tea to our wonderful community as we reunify and expand! Welcome to newcomers!
