Our worst nightmare........this is not how she expected to kick off her senior year.
My sister Regina got a late-night call that NO parent should ever receive. Our sweet Genesis was driving her cousin home on Saturday night when a reckless driver slammed into them. The call was to let Regina know that Genesis was being transported by ambulance to UNM hospital in Albuquerque. There was no time to ask questions, her and Zachary (her brother) just wanted to get there as quickly and as safe as possible. There was no way to know what condition she was in until they could get there and be by her side. Thank God that she was alive and conscious, but the extent of her injuries was still to be determined. Her cousin was also taken in right alongside her and she was blessed to walk away with very minor injuries.
After a very long night of examinations, labs, tests, and scans Genesis was diagnosed with a brain bleed, fractured vertebrae at the middle of her neck, 10 fractured ribs on her left side as well as 2 on her right, a fracture on her left knee, a fracture on her left ankle, and several fractures on her sacrum and pelvis. Needless to say, we were all very relieved that the injuries were not immediately life-threatening, but she was admitted and taken to neuroscience ICU to monitor the brain bleed and her left lung which had partially collapsed. By Tuesday morning she was in surgery for her pelvis and ankle, which were both successful and not as extensive as initially expected.
She is currently recovering but is in a lot of pain and has been told that she will not be able to put any weight on her ankle or the pelvis for at least 6 weeks. Ideally, as long as there are no complications, she should be able to go home soon but will definitely need long-term therapy.
Anyone who knows Genesis, knows a very kind, sweet, soft spoken, and gentle young girl. She is a girl of many talents and is not afraid to try new and different things. She loves art and has gifted friends and family with paintings as well as beautiful crocheted pieces that bring a whole new meaning to what some would consider a lost art. She plays several instruments and surprised us all by showing us she can dance too! She is at peace when she is out in nature or caring for animals, her cats must be going crazy without her right now. This is the side of her that I and many others know, but I have seen a different side of her in this unexpected season of her life. She has the heart of a lion; I am in awe of how beautifully she advocates for herself when dealing with the doctors and nurses and the quiet strength and determination she has shown so far. I leave inspired and confident after a visit that her story is far from over, God has big plans for her, she is destined for greatness.
My sister is a single parent and will have to miss a lot of work to focus her time on Genesis' care and well-being. This fundraiser is intended to help ease her mind and give her freedom and peace in knowing that she can do that without having to worry about meeting her daily/monthly expenses and bills. Anything you can give is very much appreciated.
Regina and our family are beyond grateful for all the family and friends that have already been so supportive and loving with prayers, messages, texts, calls, visits, gifts, food, and money. What a blessing it is to have an amazing community. We are also grateful for the Doctors and medical staff at UNMH for the attention and care that they have given to our precious Genesis, their professionalism and dedication have been outstanding, we truly appreciate them.
Please continue to pray and stand in agreement with us for Genesis' healing and recovery. Prayers are being answered every day, we are witnesses to that and we are grateful for your steadfastness. We include you all in our prayers, thanking God for the amazing family and friends that he has blessed us with, we can't tell you enough how much we LOVE and appreciate you.
God's love is constant, unwavering, and enduring.
~ Isaiah 40:31 ~
But those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
