The Maresca family recently received unexpected news about their sweet 9-year-old, Mason. He has been diagnosed with craniosynostosis, a condition he has had since birth that affects the way the bones in his skull grew. For Mason, the issue was undetectable until recently.

With craniosynostosis, one or more of the joints in the skull close too early — in Mason’s case, all of them closed — which severely limits the space the brain has to grow. Over time, this can change the shape of the head and put pressure on the brain. To make sure Mason can continue to grow, learn, and thrive, he will need corrective surgery, scheduled for March 17.

This surgery is incredibly important for Mason’s long-term health. Without treatment, craniosynostosis can lead to developmental delays, learning and memory challenges, vision problems, headaches, and seizures. While this diagnosis is scary, surgery gives Mason the best chance at a healthy future.

The medical costs for Mason’s care have already been overwhelming. One genetic test alone cost over $5,000, and that is just a small part of the many expenses the family is facing. Between testing, surgery, hospital stays, and recovery care, the bills add up quickly.
