On October 21, 2025, our family experienced a heartbreak that words can barely hold. My brother, Cesar Avila, and his partner, Michelle Rodriguez, lost their beautiful 7-year-old son, Austin, in a tragic drowning accident.

Austin was on the autism spectrum and was a curious soul, full of light, and loved deeply. He managed to bolt out of the home at night and ran to the pond that is in their backyard. He unfortunately drowned that evening and was found and recovered by our mother, Maria, who was his bonus grandmother and took care of him often. It is a true tragedy.

He had a way of touching everyone’s heart with his gentle spirit, and the joy he brought into every room. Though he was only seven, his impact was infinite. He taught all of us about unconditional love, patience, and seeing beauty in the smallest moments.

My brother stepped into fatherhood with open arms, raising Austin as his own since he was a baby. The bond they shared was one that transcended blood — it was love in its purest form. Watching him and his partner walk through this unimaginable loss has been both heartbreaking and humbling. They also have a 2-year-old son who will have to grow up without a big brother.

Funds will go toward meals for the family, moving costs as they know will be relocating to another home, and the support they’ll need in the weeks and months ahead as they take time to heal. Any additional donations will be used to honor Austin’s legacy through autism safety awareness efforts.
