Hi. My name is Nicola! Bumper is my 6 year old rescue and my best friend in the entire world. Bumper is pretty sick right now and me being frazzled is an understatement, so I’m going to explain the best I can!
On Monday, December 2nd, I took him to his usual vet because he had been vomiting all night, not eating, and just acting “off.” His bloodwork revealed liver enzymes that were 10x higher than the normal range, indicating acute liver injury. We were rushed to the emergency room where he was treated for anaphylactic shock. He was given immediate treatment of IV fluids, epinephrine, acetylcystine, activated charcoal, and more.
Tests and ultrasounds were done, but the exact cause is unknown. Bumper has always had bad allergies/skin problems that cause him to itch immensely and be uncomfortable, but this was different than usual. We are unsure if his grass allergy turned into an extreme reaction or if he ingested something that he shouldn’t have. Regardless, even after treatment, his liver enzymes are still indicating a potential serious liver problem. He is not out of the woods yet. We will only know if more specific tests and treatment are necessary once his labwork is rechecked next week. I was informed the specific liver test is roughly $2,000, not including the treatments that would come after it. Unfortunately, the total vet bills are already around $2,390, which does not include the lab work and check up for next week. Overall the grand total of all visits may be over $6k.
I am doing everything in my power to be confident and make sure Bumper has a speedy recovery. I truly cannot imagine my life without him. The past couple of days have been a living nightmare and it’s been very tough for me to not know if he is “okay” yet or what caused this. All we can do right now is monitor him closely until his next lab work can be done (liver labs aren’t done too close together because of the 2.5 day half-life.)
Bumper has saved my life and brought me joy and companionship I can’t really put into words. Anyone who knows me knows how tight our bond is. I know nothing right now except my absolute need to get him through this. He has been through hell and back since he was born. Being left on a busy highway and then hit by a car at only a few months old, hence why the rescue team named him “Bumper.” He was not only fighting for his life at such a young age, but was found to be severely malnourished and covered in mange. Despite this, he is the sweetest boy one could ever meet. He bathes you in kisses and has the goofiest smile you’ve ever seen. He deserves a long and beautiful life and I want nothing more than to make sure he gets that.
I am swallowing my pride and asking for help. Every penny counts. I am a full time nursing student so a sudden vet bill of this amount is life-altering. All funds will go towards his cumulative vet bills.
Thank you so much for even taking the time to read this. Every cent and every share counts! I am grateful for any help we can get. Bumper says thank you as well.
I’ll give an update soon <3
