Help Britagne Fight for Her Life

It has taken everything in me to write this because asking for help is one of the hardest things we've ever had to do. But right now, our family needs it.

My wife, Britagne, is the strongest person I have ever known. She is an incredible woman, an amazing mother to our four beautiful children, and the person who held our family together. If you've ever met Britagne, you know she always puts others before herself. She loves being outdoors, staying active, working out, and helping anyone who needs it. She has a servant's heart and has spent her life caring for the people she loves.

We have four amazing children together: Kysen (15), Rhyden (14), Brinley (12), and Greyson (9). They are her entire world, and right now they need their mom more than ever. She deserves to watch them graduate, celebrate every milestone, and one day meet the grandbabies we've always dreamed about.

On May 28th, what looked like a simple spider bite turned into something none of us could have imagined. Britagne was admitted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas on June 4th and has been there since. A giant hematoma formed on her right calf from the bite. The pain was excruciating, and she required surgery to remove large blood clots and drain the area. Over the following weeks she was often incoherent as her condition worsened.

Complicating everything, Britagne is also battling end-stage liver failure. This made surgery and routine care far more dangerous — doctors warned she could bleed out. Multiple doctors told us she might have only days to a month to live and recommended hospice after just two weeks in the hospital. Britagne spent 10 days in the MICU, then time in the cardio ICU before being moved to a regular floor. But she refused to give up. She told the doctors she would fight to live as long as she could for her family, and she insisted they do everything possible to save her.

The medical team has provided everything they can: blood transfusions, plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate, antibiotics, potassium, and other life-saving treatments to try to stabilize her dangerously low lab values. Just as she seemed to be improving, she developed a gram-negative blood infection along with staph infection. The infection caused tissue necrosis around her stitches, and doctors had to perform two bedside procedures to remove dead skin and place her on additional antibiotics.

Right now, Britagne is not yet eligible for the liver transplant list. Before she can be considered for transplant surgery, doctors must get her blood clotting and labs stable enough to tolerate the operation. That stabilization process could take several months, and until then every day is focused on helping her body heal and become strong enough for the next step. Our goal is to beat the odds and get her back to good health.

I have watched her endure more pain than I ever thought a person could survive, and somehow, she still finds the strength to fight. If there’s anyone who can make it through this, it’s Britagne. I have seen her face every challenge with determination and courage — even the births of our children amazed me with her strength. I remember her chasing down hospital staff after delivery because they had taken our newborn to the nursery — she wasn’t about to let her baby out of her sight. That’s who she is.

Thankfully, Britagne will soon be able to come home from the hospital, which is a huge answer to our prayers. But coming home is only the next step. She'll need a lot of home health care and weekly visits to specialists as the doctors keep an eye on her liver and blood clotting. She’ll also have physical therapy to help her learn to walk again on her right leg and get movement and feeling back in her right hand, plus work on her overall recovery.

Throughout this ordeal, I have stayed by Britagne’s side while trying to care for our children. Because I couldn’t maintain the work schedule my employer required during this medical emergency, I lost my job. There was never a question about where I needed to be, but losing my income and insurance has put us in a tough spot financially.

We could not have made it this far without Britagne’s mom, Sheila. She flew from Utah to Kansas to care for Britagne, watch our kids, and support our family through this unimaginably difficult time. Her love and sacrifice have carried us through some of our darkest days, and we are forever grateful.

As we continue this journey, we are hoping to relocate closer to family and friends once Britagne is healthy enough to travel. Having a stronger support system nearby will make an incredible difference as she continues her recovery.

• Childcare and support for our children while Britagne continues treatment and recovery

• Relocation expenses so we can move closer to family and the support we'll need in the months ahead

We know there is still a long road ahead, but we are holding on to hope that one day this season will be behind us, and she will be able to continue doing what she loves most — being a mom, and someday a grandmother.
