BJ Stasio is a passionate advocate for the rights and inclusion of individuals with disabilities, based in Buffalo, New York. For over 20 years, BJ has dedicated his life to empowering others, serving as President of the Board of Directors for the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State (SANYS) and working with organizations like People, Inc, NADSP, and the Institute for Exceptional Care. His leadership has amplified the voices of self-advocates, promoted person-centered initiatives, and inspired countless individuals to pursue self-determination and independence.
BJ’s impact extends far beyond his local community. He has been recognized with awards such as the NADSP Humanitarian Award, AADMD Self-Advocate of the Year, and induction into the Susan Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame. His advocacy has influenced state policy, increased funding for direct support professionals, and created opportunities for others to develop their own advocacy skills through his "Art of Advocacy" platform. BJ leads a group of over 35 self-advocates, providing mentorship and learning opportunities that help shape a more inclusive society.
Despite his tireless work for others, BJ now faces significant personal challenges. His accessible van, essential for traveling to speaking engagements and advocacy events, has required costly repairs, leaving him struggling to cover basic living expenses like rent. BJ is known for always putting others first, often at the expense of his own wellbeing. By supporting this fundraiser, you will help provide BJ with the peace of mind and stability he needs to continue his invaluable work for the disability community in Buffalo, across New York, and beyond.
