Help the Gearty family stay in their home while fighting brain cancer
Before last year, our lives in Red Bank were filled with everyday routines - Bill and I working, our daughter attending college, and our son at Red Bank Regional High School. We never imagined how quickly everything could change.
In March of 2023, I rushed Bill to Jersey Shore Medical Center after he suddenly became unwell. A brain scan revealed a meningioma the size of a softball. Within a week, surgeons removed the tumor and part of his skull, followed by radiation to keep it from growing back. We believed the worst was behind us.
But in the fall of 2024, a routine MRI revealed a second malignant brain tumor - this time an aggressive grade 3 anaplastic meningioma, pressing on his motor strip. Bill underwent another surgery on October 15, 2024, but suffered a stroke during the operation that rendered his right hand useless. Essential tremors in his left hand also limit its use. The cancer is rare, aggressive, and has the potential to spread.
Bill's doctors started him on targeted chemotherapy as well as medication for seizures and essential tremors. The side effects, combined with the loss of function in his right hand and limited use of his left hand due to tremors have made him disabled and unable to work.
Earlier this year he lost his job and with it our family's heath insurance. We now face the heavy cost of family medical care, health insurance and everyday living expenses on a reduced income.
Because of medical bills, high insurance costs, and the loss of Bill’s income, we are in deep financial stress. Our rent is $3,200/month, and housing in Red Bank is limited and expensive. Staying here is essential as our son, Robert, is a junior at Red Bank Regional High School, surrounded by his friends and support network. A forced move to a new school would be devastating for him while he's already carrying the fear of losing his dad.
Our most urgent need is to cover our rent for the next two years so we can stay in our home during this fight. Stability is everything right now - not just for Bill’s recovery, but for our children’s emotional well-being and our family's peace of mind.
Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward keeping a roof over our heads while Bill continues to fight. Please consider sharing our story. Your kindness, prayers, and support mean more to us than words can express.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for walking this road with us.
