Dear friends of the West Kentucky community and beyond,

My friend Artemio Romero was arrested by ICE on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, while he was commuting to his job. He was taken to a holding facility in Hopkinsville.

Artemio is 28 and has lived in the United States since he was two years old. He lives in Paducah with his mother, sister, and brother, whom he has helped to raise. He is a pillar and breadwinner for their home, and his arrest and possible deportation would rip apart their family and send him to a country he has never truly known.

Artemio is a good man, known to be able to make anyone laugh with his constant wisecracks or a well-deployed side-eye. Put on some music, you'll feel him dragging your arm to the dancefloor to show off some moves, and he is a gifted artist, often seen with a sketch pad in his hand. He also loves to play tabletop or video games with his friends and younger brother, Luis, who sees him as a role model and a father figure.

Your donation would mean the Romeros would be able to cover the cost of legal fees, cover bills Artemio has previously been responsible for, and, if it comes to it, help him to resettle in the Guadalajara area, where his extended relatives still have a residence.
