Our girl Anne-Marie recently lost her mom, Ms. Patty (AKA Momma Patty), and all of us who love her are heartbroken right alongside her. Ms. Patty was warm, funny, generous, and such a bright presence in so many of our lives. Most of all, she was Anne-Marie’s best friend.
On top of the grief, Anne-Marie is suddenly facing a lot of unexpected financial pressures at a time when she’s already stretched far beyond what anyone should have to endure. A group of us have come together to support her however we can, and she’s agreed to let us set up this GoFundMe to help ease the load.
If you can, we hope you’ll join us, whether by donating, sharing the link to this page, or sending love her way.
Here’s AMA’s story in her own words:
Hi friends and family, and friends I just don’t know yet, My name is Anne-Marie. For the past four years, and especially this year, I’ve been navigating an unexpected series of challenges. At the urging of dear friends, I’m swallowing my pride and reaching out for help.
Earlier this month, my mother, Patty Angelo—who brought joy, humor, and generosity everywhere she went—passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. I am heartbroken. She was my best friend. Her passing came just months after losing my Aunt Maureen in June, my mom’s sister and another central figure in my life. We were already grieving Auntie Mo when we lost Mom too.
This spring, Mom and I had bought a house together in Virginia Beach. I had saved for several years for the down payment, and we were so excited. The downstairs master bedroom was meant to be Mom’s safe, comfortable space, where she could receive care and support for the rest of her life. There were bedrooms upstairs for me and for my wonderful nephew Gio (age 5). With the extra space, Gio was able to stay with us 2–3 nights a week this spring and summer, which we absolutely loved. Mom adored Gio, and those days in our new house with him were some of her happiest times.
Gio is my brother Shawn’s son. Like our mom, Shawn also passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at age 39 in 2021. Growing up, it was the three of us: Mom, Shawn, and me. “Team Angelo,” as Mom called us. I’m doing my best to try to carry forward the love, laughter, and strength our family always shared, and to pass that on to Gio.
In late September, our house developed a serious issue that needed urgent repair. I had a serious health reaction and had to go to the ER. Mom and I evacuated to a hotel, where we lived and where she was staying when she passed away. I’m still in the hotel today.
My health struggles have continued over the past couple months. I’ve been in the hospital and urgent care several times, have seen multiple specialists, and was recently diagnosed with a chronic illness that requires ongoing management and has brought unexpected costs.
Over the past few years, I’ve taken two unpaid leaves of absence from work to provide medically necessary care for Mom and to support my family. In total, I have lost nearly a year of income. I would do it all again in a heartbeat, and I’m so grateful Mom and I had all the time together that we did.
Now, I’m responsible for the mortgage on my own. The house can’t be lived in, or rented, until the repairs are complete. I’m also facing funeral costs, medical bills, and additional everyday expenses, as I can’t access any clothing or belongings from the house until it is safe to return.
Any support, whether sharing this post, sending prayers, or donating, would mean the world to me. Please do not donate if you are not in a financial position to do so. I’m incredibly grateful for the people surrounding me during this time, and I promise to pay it forward as much as I can when I’m able.
Although I’ve never felt their absence more deeply, I believe my Mom, Shawn, and Auntie Mo are guiding me from Heaven, and I feel the warmth and love of the people supporting me here.
Thank you for being part of that group by reading this.
With love and gratitude,
Anne-Marie
