Hello, we are Heather Becton Hunt and Chialin Kao, and Alex is a beloved, sweet friend, not only to us but to many of you as well, we are sure! As you may know, our dear friend was in a terrible car accident on October 19, 2025. On that Sunday, early in the morning, she was struck by an underinsured driver who blew through a red light & t-boned her at 60mph on Route 2. In addition to totalling her car, she sustained multiple injuries, a broken wrist, a broken sternum, large hematomas on her legs, and most severely, internal bleeding. We are so very lucky that she is still with us to bring her light & joy to us all! However, she still has a long way to go yet.
Unfortunately, the driver who hit Alex was underinsured & has no assets to be able to make Alex whole from this ordeal. In addition to healing, Alex now has the burden of enormous medical bills from her critical care from level 1 trauma ICU treatment, a week of hospital stay followed by a week in inpatient rehabilitation, follow-up doctors' appointments, and we have learned that she needs surgery to repair her broken wrist on Tuesday 11/11. She now faces months of physical and occupational therapy to regain her strength and mobility. Additionally, she has the extra expense of having to replace her car as the insurance won’t fully cover the cost.
Alex is the primary caretaker for her 80-year-old father, who lives with her. She is also a dedicated teacher and very much misses her colleagues and students. She is clamoring to get back to them & talks about them regularly! Due to the severity of her injuries, Alex has had to stop working until January 18th 2026 at the earliest per doctor's order. Alex's mounting medical expenses and loss of her vehicle have created a significant financial burden.
While Alex has health insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the at-fault driver carried only $25,000 in liability coverage, the minimum amount required under MA law. Because of this, Alex's insurance must first recover whatever it can from the driver's limited policy before it finalizes what it will pay toward her own medical care. That process can take several months and does not guarantee full coverage. In the meantime, Alex is being billed directly for essential therapy and follow-up medical services that are not currently covered, even though they are critical for her recovery and long-term mobility.
The purpose of this GoFundMe is to help bridge that financial gap: to cover immediate rehabilitation costs, therapy sessions, and other expenses while the insurance system sorts itself out. The work of healing is enough for Alex to have to deal with without the added financial worry she is facing at this time. All funds raised will go directly to Alex’s Medical Trust to pay down her medical bills. If there are any funds leftover, they will go towards replacing her beloved Subaru Forester.
Alex has always given so much to her students, family, and friends. Now, she needs support from the community she has touched in so many ways. We, as her community of family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors can help make this burden lighter for her!
