Summer Leadership Academy

James Kenan High School students are a collection of some of the most resilient, motivated, and hard-working students. However, the school lacks resources to adequately prepare graduating students with the skills and knowledge to overcome the challenges of succeeding in college, especially for the many who will be first in their family to attend university.
We have designed the Summer Leadership Academy, a rigorous two week program, to prepare students to align their values with a concrete vision for their future and plan their path to achieving it. The Summer Leadership Academy will also train them to be mentors and guides for fellow students unable to attend our program, in the hopes of creating a school culture driven towards aiding the ambition of all. Students who complete the Academy will be better prepared to use their success to become leaders and change-makers within their community. Anticipated funding from donors and the school's enrichment fund have come up short, so we need help financing the following:
$200 - Office Supplies to help students construct a portfolio.
$400 - Snacks and food for the duration of the program.
$100 - Gas reimbursement and gift cards for guest speakers.
$450 - T-shirts for students to wear upon completion of the program and during peer advising sessions during the year.
$500 x 2 - stipends for the two program directors. We were led to believe we would be compensated for the time leading and planning the academy. The funding source has apparently turned up empty. (Our normal teaching rate is $21.50 an hour x60 hours = $1,290 so additional money raised will go towards making up the difference).
These funds are needed as soon as possible so that we can prepare the empowering experience that our students deserve. We deeply appreciate your help in making James Kenan High School the avenue to long-lasting community progress. Your donations will help our students turn their ambitions into reality.
