Many of you know that I had a dream for this land when I moved onto it over five and a half years ago. My dream was to turn this overgrown hedge nursery into a place to grow food and teach people how to live healthier and more sustainable lives. The photo is how the place looked my first spring there (2013).
Unfortunately, I have come to realize that it needs more than an audacious idea of one. I have tried to get people on the land for work trade with dismal results. I try to keep the blackberry, bindweed and thistle at bay, but they have taken over the place (including the overgrown shrubs and trees that are HUGE now). This is definitely not a one person job.
I have not been able to invest in the farm beyond maintenance with all my money (and debt) tied up in my startup business that's taking way longer to launch than expected.
I have decided I need to walk away from my dream and lease the land to younger farmers. To do that, I need to clear about 6-7 acres of all the vegetation. The window to do that is this fall before the rains come and make the soil too wet to work.
I am asking for donations to help pay for the services to do so. It requires an excavator and a tub grinder (big tub with blades to drop the whole plant in). This is an expensive operation.
It's really difficult to tell you that I was not able fulfill my big dream. However, with this financial boost, I will be able to get the right kind of folks to grow food, which is the only thing to do with this precious land.
