Sponsor a historic wooden covered bridge restoration! The NHDOT has condemned the Wentworth Village 1909 steel truss bridge that crosses the Baker River and is removing it this fall. A bridge has crossed here since the late 1700's and this passage is a vital part of our community.
As our steel bridge was being condemned, the historic 50-year-old wooden covered bridge at the Wayfarer Inn in Bedford, NH was facing destruction as the property was cleared for a new plaza. This bridge is eligible for the National Historic Registry. With help from a private party, we disassembled the Bedford Bridge (also known as the Goffe's Mill Bridge), removed it from Bedfored and relocated it to Wentworth.
We've now moved to the restoration phase. The Engineers and Bridge Restoration Specialists involved in the project indicate that the expected life span of the restored Goffe's Mill Bridge is 75 years from now - 2090!! We have pledges for building materials and other fundraisers under way to see this through, as well as a pledge for the necessary abutment modifications.
All contributors will be recognized in the Wentworth Historical Society and a plaque or other form of recognition will be devised when the bridge is put in place over the falls.
