Sophia is the daughter of Erin Gervais our long time Lead EMT in the Nashoba Emergency Department.  Last summer she underwent a surgical procedure at Children's Hospital to implant Harrington Rods along her thoracic spine to alleviate a severe form of spinal scoliosis. This summer she underwent a second major spinal surgery at Children's as her scoliosis had progressed in the lumbar spine below the area of the original surgery. Two weeks ago she underwent a third exploratory surgery to try to diagnose the cause of persistent high fevers she had developed a month post-operatively.

Sophia is now back in the hospital for the second time in just over a week. She has a severe infection with a serious concern that she may require more major spinal surgery if the infection involves the metallic hardware in her spine.

People at Nashoba know Erin as a wonderful person and EMT, who has helped thousands of patients during some of their worst illnesses and injuries. She is a single mother with two of her children in high school (Olivia is starting as a freshman this year). Both of Sophia's surgeries required weeks in the hospital and recovery and Erin needed to use up all of her vacation and sick time to tend to her. She will now be out for an unknown amount of time to be with Sophia with no other source of income as a replacement. In the meantime rent, bills, etc. will be piling up.
